Why Armed Guards Should Get the EHCP
⢠Allows you to carry offâduty
⢠Gives you reciprocity in many other states
⢠Protects you when traveling to and from work
⢠Many employers prefer or require it
⢠You avoid taking duplicate training
âYour armed guard firearms training already qualifies you for the EHCP.
You donât need the EHCP class â just apply, get fingerprinted, and submit your armed guard training certificate.
How an Armed Security Officer Gets Their EHCP in Tennessee
âYour armed security registration only allows you to carry a firearm while youâre on duty for a licensed security company. If you want to carry offâduty as a private citizen, you need an Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit. The process is separate, but itâs easy to complete while youâre becoming an armed guard.â
Now hereâs the full, stepâbyâstep process:
đš StepâbyâStep: How an Armed Guard Gets Their EHCP
1. Take the EHCP Training Course
Even though youâre completing armed guard firearms training, Tennessee still requires the EHCPâspecific class, which includes:
⢠Minimum 4 hours classroom instruction
⢠Liveâfire qualification
2. Submit Your EHCP Application Online
Go to the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security website and complete the handgun permit application.
Youâll choose:
⢠Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit (EHCP)
3. Get Fingerprinted
Even if you were fingerprinted for your armed security registration, you must be fingerprinted again for the EHCP because:
⢠PPS and DOS do not share fingerprint/background systems
⢠They are two different departments with separate requirements
Fingerprinting is done through the stateâs approved vendor.
4. Upload or Present Your Training Certificate
After completing your EHCP class, youâll receive a training certificate.
You must submit it to the Department of Safety as part of your application.
5. Pay the State Fee
The EHCP has its own state fee, separate from PPS registration fees.
6. Wait for Approval
Once the background check clears, the state will mail your permit.
