About this training
The NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course is the definitive program for anyone new to the world of smoothbore firearms. This intensive training guides students through the mechanical operation of break-action, pump-action, and semi-automatic shotguns. You will learn the NRA’s primary rules for safe gun handling, the specific components of shotgun shells (shot, wad, powder, and primer), and how to identify various gauges and chokes. Unlike rifle or pistol shooting, shotgunning emphasizes "pointing" over "aiming," and a significant portion of this course is dedicated to mastering the fundamentals: stance, gun ready position, swing to target, trigger pull, and follow-through. During supervised range sessions, students practice these techniques by engaging moving clay targets, building the hand-eye coordination necessary for success in field or competitive environments. The course also covers cleaning, maintenance, and the ethical responsibilities of shotgun ownership.
